The IQ Font
Monday, August 31, 2009iQ font – When driving becomes writing / Full making of from wireless on Vimeo.
I’m a type geek, and love finding innovative ways of creating type treatments. My friend pointed me to this really cool project by Toyota and ad agency Happiness Brussels. In order to promote Toyota’s new car called the iQ, the agency came up with the idea of producing a font based entirely on the car’s handling capabilities. With the help of Pierre and Damien from Please Let Me Design and interactive artist Zachary Lieberman (openframeworks.cc), they were able to create a software program that tracked the car’s movements. From there, professional racing pilot Stef Van Campenhoudt executed the skids necessary to bring the iQ font to life.

The Afrofunk Expressway
Friday, August 28, 2009International record dealer extraordinaire, Paulo of Superfly Records, recently put together this mix for Paris DJs, one of my favorite sites for mixes. Known for his record excavations from all corners of the globe, he stocks some of the coolest and rarest vinyl at his online shop (soon to be re-launched). Needless to say, I definitely owe a small chunk of my collection to that man.Paulo’s been busy putting together mixes using records he’s pulled on recent trips to Africa, this being the second in his Afrofunk Expressway series. The first volume in addition to another African mix can be downloaded at www.parisdjs.com.
African music is quickly becoming a bit of an obsession of mine, and I’m busy planning an African mix of my own for the site. Until then, I wanted to post this mix to get the African vibes out there. Hope you like it.

Cold War Kids
Tuesday, August 25, 2009Check out this cool music video for the Cold War Kids’ “I’ve Seen Enough.” Done by the production company Tool, it’s the first video of its kind which basically allows the user to customize the song in real time. Each band member has four colored bars above them which can be activated by the user to trigger different instruments or styles of play. Click on the member and you can mute them completely. From reggae and acoustic versions, to straight up acapella, bass lines and drum breaks, the possibilities are endless. With traditional music videos becoming all but obsolete, it’s not surprising that bands are re-approaching how their music is heard and distributed, and it’s companies like Tool that are coming up with brilliant ideas to help bring their music to life.

Welcome to Dreams in Audio
Sunday, August 23, 2009
Hi and welcome to the launch of Dreams in Audio, the blog about music, mixtapes, art and design. My name is Brian. I am an Art Director and at one time a DJ and producer, and Dreams in Audio is my outlet to share all things related to the world of art and music.
The idea for Dreams in Audio came from my love for mixes. I used to make them in high school and pass them on to friends. In college I started getting into DJing and producing, and while those ventures haven’t panned out (besides the occasional DJ gig), the obsessive vinyl habit stuck. In 2005 I started the blog Ear Fuzz, which focuses on everything from hip hop and jazz, to funk and psychedelic rock records. It was a blast, but I soon found that posting about one or two tracks here and there was unfulfilling. For me, mixes feel much more tangible.
Dreams in Audio will feature mixes that I compile myself, by guests or ones that I find around the internet that can serve as a soundtrack for this site as well as your daily musings. Beyond the obvious genre specific mixes (funk, hip hop, soul, jazz, ect), I hope to really delve into more conceptual territory. I already have an idea for seasonal mixes, the first of which will be an Autumn themed mix. Stay tuned for that and the many great mixes I plan to provide for you.
As an Art Director and Designer, I often find that music and design intersect. For me personally, one almost always compliments or stems from the other. So in addition to the mixes and music that will be featured on the site, I plan to post cool things in the way of design, type, photography, film, illustration, web and whatever else keeps my eyes peeled.
So without further ado, to launch Dreams in Audio I am presenting you my very first mix on one of my absolute favorite genres, Brazilian music. I think I first caught the Brazilian bug when I saw City of God, and you might recognize Tim Maia’s “No Caminho Do Bem” which was featured in the film. Brazil’s culture and history is rich with some of the most amazing music released anywhere, and it was quite a chore picking tracks that I thought served as a good introduction to the genre.
Wax Poetics, a bi-monthly journal on record digging, just did a fantastic issue fully dedicated to Brazilian music. If you are at all interested in discovering more, I’d highly recommend seeking out a copy. And if you want to head straight to your local record store and dive right in, Jorge Ben, Marcos Valle, Tim Maia, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa are great places to start. Hope you enjoy the mix.
