Favela on Blast is the directorial debut of Wesley Pentz (better known as DJ and producer Diplo) and Leandro HBL. A true labor of love and years in the making, the documentary explores Brazil’s vibrant musical subculture called Baile Funk, as Pentz travels deep into favelas to examine the artists and communities that have helped shape this culture, as well as the output of his Mad Decent label.
Really looking forward to watching this. You can get a digital copy for only $5 here.
Finally got around to doing a Summer mix, inspired by the Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rythm Band track “Express Yourself.” Here, it’s covered by Byron Lee and the Dragonaires to great summer effect, setting the tone for the entire mix. A pretty diverse collection of warm summer vibes – something you can enjoy at a BBQ or picnic, or on your stoop sipping sangria. Some longtime summertime favorites of mine here, like Cymande’s “Bra” or Wilson Simonal’s “Nem Vem que Nao Tem,” as well as some recent discoveries. Hopefully everything meshes well together despite the eclectic selection. Enjoy and have a great summer.

I’m a huge Seu Jorge fan so I was excited to hear about his upcoming project with Almaz (drummer Pupillo and guitarist Lucio Maia from the stalwart Nação Zumbi, with bassist and composer Antonio Pinto). Apparently they worked on a track together for a Walter Salles film and enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to record a full-length album together that will be released by Now Again on July 27. Covering famous Brazilian tunes as well as some American and European soul classics, their first single is a cover of the Roy Ayers anthem “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” and if this is any indicator of the entire album, I can’t wait for it to drop. Loving the artwork with all of this too.
You can read more about the project here and listen to the first single below.

I got my Timeless DVD box set yesterday and included was a mix by DJ Nuts, one of the premier collectors of Brazilian music (check out the video below of Nuts going through his Brazilian rares). The mix is dedicated to one of the stars of the box set, producer/arranger/composer Arthur Verocai, a man who’s talents transpired across Brazilian music through the 60′s and 70′s and culminated on his self titled debut from 1972, a record I believe to be one of the best Brazil has to offer. The mix digs deep into Verocai’s catalog of records he’s been a part of, and in just a few days the heads over at Soulstrut have already done a pretty nice job of cracking the track list, although some gaps remain to be filled.
Quite simply an amazing mix, and a job well done by Timeless.

Compiled and released by Joel Stones of Tropicalia in Furs, Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas brings together some of Brazil’s rarest fuzz/funk/psych 45s from 1967-1976. Rarely do I get geeked about new releases, but I’ve been looking forward to this since Joel talked about it in the Wax Poetics Brazil issue last year. Born and raised in Brazil, Joel knows his shit, and in a world cluttered with comps, this one just seems like a no-brainer.
I’m eagerly awaiting my copy, but you can order them direct here. This is the limited edition version with amazing custom artwork complete with 3D glasses, and in my opinion this is the only way to fly as the regular cover art is pretty bland. Don’t sleep on this one!

Here’s a beautiful live version of Novos Baianos’ “Mysterio Do Planeta” taken from their album Acabou Chorare. I used this track for my Braziliance mix, but this version sounds even better to my ears.
ne of my biggest regrets of 2009 was not making it down to LA for Mochilla’s Timeless series, a 3-part concert that commemorated three legendary figures in music: Mulatu Astatke, J Dilla, and Arthur Verocai. Each has had profound impact on hip hop music, J Dilla more directly than the other two, but more than [...]
As 2009 is coming to a close I wanted to do a quick retrospective of my top record finds of the year. I got a lot of great records in 2009, but these seven stand out as the ones that truly marked definitive moments in the year. These are all pretty unique and special recordings, [...]
Here’s another great Brazilian mix courtesy of DJ Ferrari. I’ve been finding a lot of Brazilian records as of late so I was thinking about getting started on Braziliance Volume 2. Until then, enjoy this killer mix. If you dig, you can download Volume 2 on his site as well as many other mixes. Lots [...]
