Numero Group :: Pressed at Boddie

by Brian on February 4, 2011 filed in Visual Posts

Last week the folks at Numero Group held a call for entries inviting people to design the record label for their upcoming Boddie release. There was just one catch: computers were prohibited.

Back in the late 60′s and early 70′s, it was exactly this no frills approach that The Boddie Recording Co., a record label run by Louise and Thomas Boddie out of Cleveland, OH, was known for. If you were pressing a record with the Boddies, you weren’t a graphic designer or illustrator. Chances were you had to sketch your logo on a cocktail napkin and that was it.

When it comes to music, authenticity is everything, and Numero, recognizing this, decided to leave it to the fans to design the labels for their upcoming Boddie release – an excellent idea with excellent results. Some of the entries are pictured above, with the winners of the CD and LP labels below. My favorite is actually the label in the middle, but in all honesty, they’re all great and really capture the spirit and charm of the Boddie’s pressing plant.

Be on the lookout for their upcoming Boddie release, and also check out their previous Boddie 45 box set.
