There have been a plethora of J Dilla tributes over the years, one of my favorites being the Suite For Ma Dukes project. But I found another one the other day, this one by the Stray Phrases, a jazz trio out of New York consisting of NYU students Storm Siegel on drums, Dave Mainella on piano, and Evan Crane on bass. Performed on Sunday October 17, 2010 at The Local 269, the trio thoughtfully and faithfully covered Dilla’s entire Donuts album, a record that naturally lends itself to a jazz cover project. Yet, the Stray Phrases manage to capture an effortless lo-fi jazz club charm that really adds a new dimension to Dilla’s original.
Stuff like this could have easily come and gone, remembered only by the few fortunate enough to attend that night. Fortunately, you can download the entire set here courtesy of Metal Lungies.
