Soul Scrapbook marks the beginning of a new feature on D.I.A. – a showcase of vintage photography, album covers and anything else in the way of music related graphics. I mean, the music is where it’s at, but sometimes I get just as excited flipping through a batch of stunning photos, and this set that I’m about to share is definitely no exception.

For this first post I’m thrilled to share an amazing collection of vintage soul, jazz, funk and gospel photos I was fortunate enough to stumble upon – essentially a who’s who of all things soulful from the 50′s through the 70′s. You can click on the thumbnails above to start the slideshow or you can go directly to my new flickr page where you can view the entire set (only about 50 out of 100 are posted here). I’ll be uploading all of my scrapbook photos, mixtape covers, as well as other music related images onto this page, and I probably won’t post about it all so I’d recommend adding it to your bookmarks or checking it periodically so you don’t miss anything.

Enjoy!

Gang Signs by Axel Koester

by Brian on August 6, 2010 filed in Visual Posts

The other day I found myself looking through some stock photography for work and came across this gripping set of images taken by Axel Koester. Depicting late 80′s gang culture in LA, they serve as a great photo essay of the time, profiling The Grape Street Watts Crips and the Malditos. Stunning and terrifying at the same time, Koester successfully captures a world that most of us are only familiar with through Hollywood and the media.

You can view the whole photo set here.

Deep In The Groove

by Brian on March 5, 2010 filed in Visual Posts

At first glance this looks like a dried up canyon on Mars or something, but in actuality it’s the groove of a vinyl record magnified 1000 times. Those clumpy parts are dust. Kind of makes me want to do a better job cleaning my records.

Digging to the Next Level

by Brian on February 2, 2010 filed in Other Mixes,Visual Posts

Frank just got back from another trip to Africa and shared these pics of his digging adventures. It’s safe to say that nobody is iller than him when it comes to vinyl excavation.

New mix of the best 45s Frank found on his trip!

Somewhere in Africa

001

Somewhere in Africa is this room filled with records…… My man Frank from Voodoo Funk sent me these photos of an untapped cache of records one of his buyers in Africa found. One can only imagine how long they’ve been there and what circumstances brought them there. Regardless, this is the type of thing record collectors dream of, and nowadays rarely happens. It’s sad to see so much music disposed of like this, but luckily it’s all being excavated and shipped off to the states where they will find new homes and new ears. Again, stay tuned for an African mix. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend.

Record Shopping Photo Essay

by Brian on October 23, 2009 filed in Audio Posts,Visual Posts

Cool photo essay on music and media up on Slate today that examines the evolution of human interaction with music. It’s something that at one point used to be a very physical thing, but has basically become a virtual experience as most music lives on ipod’s and computers.

House Remixed

October 9, 2009

I’ve always had a ton of respect for People Under the Stairs. Since the 90′s they’ve been one of the most consistent groups in hip hop, in large part to Thes One’s (real name Christopher Portugal) relentless pursuit of the perfect beat. Over the years I’ve read a lot of articles and interviews with him [...]
