Pads of Fire
Monday, January 11, 2010After college I tried my hand at production, messing around and recording backpacker rap tracks with friends. I started off with stuff like Acid Pro, Fruity Loops and all that stuff until I eventually splurged for an MPC XL2000. Nowadays it seems you can make just about anything on a computer, but I don’t think any program has been able to emulate the natural feeling of the MPC’s pads. I’ve always thought that Jel from Anticon was one of the best MPC performers I’d ever seen, but I saw this video of new Dipset producer AraabMuzik and damn; kids have been steeping their game up. Impressive stuff.

Edan’s Echo Party
Thursday, December 3, 2009
his is a video for Edan’s latest release, Echo Party, quite possibly one of the wildest mixtapes ever made. Edan was given access to the Traffic Ent. Group’s back catalog of old school rap labels like Magic Records, Chocolate Star, and P&P, and asked to create something entirely new. He could have gone the simple mixtape route, but instead Edan has created a 30-min record of dance, rap and punk, utilizing everything from turntables, tape echo, guitar, moog and maybe even kazoos. Crazy, but genius stuff.
CDs are in stores now. Stones Throw was taking pre-orders for the LP but looks like they are all sold out. Too bad because each LP was going to feature individualized art by Edan himself.

Clipse: We Got The Remix
Wednesday, October 21, 2009This mixtape has been floating around for a while now, but I wanted to re-up it for anyone that missed it. It features unreleased tracks and remixes by some of today’s hottest producers like Diplo, Ghislain Poirier, A.Brucker & Sinden, Nick Catchdubs, Jake One, and The Amps. Benzi does a great job mixing this one and shows why the Clipse are one of the best rap groups out there.

The Wu-Note Project
Monday, September 14, 2009
Wu-Tang album covers are amongst some of the most classic in hip hop, but Logan Walters is giving them a run for their money with his Wu-Note Project. Reid Miles was the Art Director for Blue Note from 1956 to 1965 and is responsible for some of the most timeless cover designs to grace any record sleeve. Often using half tones, sharp geometric shapes, Swiss inspired design aesthetics and big, bold typography, Miles’ impact on design is immense. As an homage to Reid, Logan has decided to recreate all of the seminal Wu-Tang album covers with a Blue Note flavor. Bobby Digital and Liquid Swords are two of my favorites, but I must say Walters has done a great job capturing the bold simplicity of Blue Note design. I’ve included some examples of classic Blue Note album covers for those that aren’t too familiar with them, followed by some of Walters’ work. He continues to release new covers on his flickr page as he completes them so be sure to check that periodically.

DJ Quik – Criminally Slept On
Thursday, September 3, 2009
Matthew Africa was kind and talented enough to put together this mix of the sorely underrated DJ Quik. Besides Dre, I don’t think anyone else has had a bigger impact on the sound of LA rap over the past 20 years, yet he remains criminally slept on. These 39 tracks give a great overview of the man’s career that is certainly far from over. You can read more at Matthew Africa’s blog and download his mix which comes highly recommended. Great Labor Day weekend listening right here. Enjoy.

Jay-Z Rhapsody Commercial
Tuesday, September 1, 2009This is one of the best commercials I’ve seen in a long time. You have to be familiar with Jay-Z’s albums, or at least most of them to get the concept, but it’s a great, simple idea executed perfectly.
